VIENNA/TOKYO, 2 October (UN Information Service) – The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) have announced the opening of the fourth round of the KiboCUBE programme.

KiboCUBE was launched in September 2015 as a capacity-building initiative between UNOOSA and JAXA to offer developing countries the opportunity to develop cube satellites (CubeSats) and deploy them from the Japanese Kibo module of the International Space Station (ISS).

On May 11, 2018, the first CubeSat developed under the KiboCUBE programme, created by a team from the University of Nairobi, was successfully deployed from the International Space Station. In June 2018, UNOOSA and JAXA decided to extend this important partnership for three more years, aiming to contribute to the enhancement of space technology in developing countries.

“At UNOOSA we are very proud of our partnership with JAXA and our joint KiboCUBE initiative. KiboCUBE is a key part of our activities to give developing countries access to space and its benefits. I appreciate JAXA’s continued support in this programme and I look forward to seeing the exciting projects that will emerge from this fourth round” said Simonetta Di Pippo, Director of UNOOSA, yesterday.

“JAXA is proud to extend this historic programme in cooperation with UNOOSA for three more years. We are proud of the successful past three rounds and it is our pleasure to keep providing opportunities to emerging space countries. I am confident that this coming fourth round will also open doors for exciting future endeavors.” said Koichi Wakata, Vice President of JAXA.

Applications for the fourth round of the KiboCUBE programme are open to educational or research institutions from developing countries that are United Nations Member States. Applications will be open from today for a period of four months and close on 31 January 2019.

A team from the University of Nairobi successfully deployed their CubeSat named “1 KUNS-PF” from the Japanese Experiment Module, International Space Station, on 11 May 2018, as Kenya’s first satellite. It is being used to test technologies developed for the future launch of a larger earth observation satellite and collect data for monitoring agriculture and coastal areas.

A team from the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala was selected for the second round of KiboCUBE, and plans to use its CubeSat to test equipment for monitoring the concentration of harmful cyanobacteria (algae blooms) over inland bodies of water.

A team from the Mauritius Research Council was selected for the third round of KiboCUBE and will collect thermal infrared images of Mauritius and its surrounding areas with the CubeSat.

A team from Surya University, Indonesia was additionally selected for the third round of KiboCUBE. The Indonesian team plans to develop a CubeSat with an Automatic Package Reporting System that transmits messages to ground stations and allows two-way communication for educational and disaster mitigation purposes. This is the first time a satellite is planned for this use within the KiboCUBE programme.

Information about the application process for the United Nations/Japan Cooperation Programme on CubeSat Deployment from the International Space Station (ISS) Japanese Experiment Module (Kibo), “KiboCUBE”, is available at:

India Pen Show in Mumbai – are you pilgrims ready?

1st India Pen Show in Mumbai – Why I will attend, and you should too.

We are different. We are fountain pen-abled. No, neither is this the “new normal” nor are we big enough as a class to be wooed politically, our numbers not significant enough to make electoral differences, leave alone our collective voice being heard. We are nerds by nature, we spend more than what we can afford in the pursuit of pens, and most of us believe that pens are more human than most of the people populating the peripheries of our individual spaces. We talk to our pens, share our little pleasures (and pains) with them, lapse into absolutely warranted (and terribly boring to lesser mortals) monologues about piston filling systems and get hurt when we are rudely asked to shut up. Oh yes, we also don’t understand why our friends and relatives and colleagues do not like, comment and share the pictures (of pens, what else) that we so religiously post in the social media.

We rue the death of the friendly neighbourhood stationary shop, where the owner would pander to our fetishes and help us in our quest for that Grail pen that all of us dream of possessing. We spend most of our free time either reading posts in Pen forums or searching the farthest corners of the net for pen trivia that we have no one to impress with. Why, some of us even suffer from acute pen-o-philia – an object attraction of a pen-ile kind (no pun intended)!

It is for people like us that the India Pen Show is being organised, just the way Pen Shows have been organised since their inception. Here we meet tribe members and realise that we are not alone in our search for that elusive “Sweet Spot” of the inky kind. Here we meet “like minded” people who are as crazy about pens as we are, if not more. Here, we meet people from the apogee of their professional careers and vagabonds who are jay-walking through life – united by a passion that transcends all the divisive forces of the world. Here we meet lovers, flower children of another kind, giving pen (and peace) a chance!

Experts, Collectors, Dealers, Turners – we meet them all under one roof, with inks and notebooks and accessories thrown in for good measure. At first it is overwhelming, intimidating even. Then the realisation breaks, that the fountain pen is a great leveller and that it is neither the size of your collection nor the knowledge that you profess, but your love, that matters – no wonder they call it mightier than the sword. The pen conquering literally, where the sword fails!

A pen show is table after table of fantasies spread for you to ogle at, to touch, to put on paper, to caress, to possess. Pen makers and dealers that you don’t ordinarily meet, ready and willing to pander to your senses with the latest and the best that they have to offer. If the pens (and the paper and the inks) are a joy to behold, then, meeting and befriending these people is sheer ecstasy. Friendships that can be inked and bonds that can last lifetimes like that White Dot on the Targa. Off course, if you are on the other end of the table, it is also a unique opportunity to meet your customers, the industry experts, network, and wait for it all to reflect on your bottom line. No, the cold efficiency of doing business in the net can not match the warmth of dealing across the table that is accorded in a pen show, just the way a stylus can never match the sheer pleasure of scratching your thoughts with a pen and seeing the ink dry, to give your words the gravity that they deserve.

Okay, a pen show is one where I lose all bearings and end up buying on whims, the impulsive dolt that I am. Okay, there is always that know-it-all person in our lives who will claim to have seen the same pen being sold cheaper in the net. Okay, there is always that possibility that a hairline crack will surface after you check your prized acquisition back from the show. But what the heck? The same things would hold wherever you buy them from. And as for Pen Show purchases being more expensive, one must understand that the costs incurred to attend these shows have to be recovered but still, if you ask me, they mostly offer the best deals.

And now India’s biggest Pen Event – The 1st India Pen Show – is slated to be held on February 2nd and 3rd 2019 at the Nehru Centre, Mumbai. The Event is being presented by William Penn and is supported by, among others, Manga Carta and Constellations88.

I will be there at the India Pen Show. Are you coming?

The event, organized by Make-Up Studio, also set make-up trends for the coming season.

October, 2018, New Delhi – Make-Up Studio Training Center (MSTC), the training arm of renowned cosmetic brand Make-Up Studio, hosted MORPH 2018. The show was held at Hotel Eros, Nehru Place, New Delhi.

Meaning transformation of the ordinary into extraordinary with the magic of makeup, MORPH presented power-packed performances and incredible transformations by makeup experts and students of MSTC. The electrifying show presented some of the most advanced techniques of makeup onstage, creating some out-of-the-world looks on faces. It was a glimpse into the best in makeup artistry aimed at taking the professional makeup industry in India to the next level.

The high-point of MORPH 2018 was a captivating and thought-provoking ramp walk by five Acid Victims, who have not let the horrific act scar their souls and have come out of the ordeal with courage and spirit. Their inner radiance reflected in their confident walk and winning persona that shined through like a glittering star.

Not only this but few known designers and brands such as Riple and Harpret Narula, Harnish Bajaj, Indu Fashions, Jewel Street, Amadi Couture came together to contribute outfits for those walking the ramp. Makeup Studio Director Mr. Ravi Mittal said, the idea for Powerwalk was to show these women that if they can do something as daunting as walking down the ramp in front of so many people, there is nothing that they can’t overcome. One of the purposes of organizing the event was also to make people meet these brave women who have triumphed over all odds.

MORPH 2018 marked the completion of 9 successful years of Make-up Studio Training Center.
The event was organized by Mr. Ravi Mittal and Mr. Rienk Koopman, founders of MSTC and put together by the faculty and students of MSTC. The best of talents from MSTC showcased their craft in front of over 300 guests that consisted of the who’s who from the make-up industry. The show was attended by leading socialites, celebrity makeup artists and professionals from top salons all over India.

In his welcome address, Mr. Ravi Mittal, Managing Director, MSTC, said, “When we brought Make-Up Studio to India, the market had never experienced anything like it. The efficiency of the products was quite a revelation for professionals and their customers. It brought about a revolution in the professional makeup industry. The improved results meant improved business for salons. At the same time, the innovative products warranted improved knowledge levels among the professionals. To help them, we started conducting training sessions for them. That is how the idea of a training school germinated and MSTC was born. Apart from courses and classes, we keep conducting seminars, workshops and shows all across country to train the new and practicing professionals. MORPH is a part of the same process. Such occasions allow us to discover the undiscovered.

Echoing similar sentiments, Mr. Rienk Koopman, founder MSTC, added in his welcome address, “When we launched Make-Up studio in India, we were not sure how it would be taken by the professional market here. It was an untested and virgin territory for us. But the way the market welcomed our products was overwhelming. We were pleasantly surprised. It was as if India was just waiting for us. It’s hard to believe that it is already 9 years old. It has created experts in the field. What makes me proud is that it has created a community of makeup artists united by MSTC as their alma mater, a trendsetting community that keeps in touch and discusses the craft and the latest techniques of makeup.”

The show kick-started with two onstage makeup demonstration by international trainer Mr. Paddy Mcgurgan and another one by Ms. Avleen Bansal, Technical Manager, Make-Up Studio India.

– “GLAM DUST” created by Paddy Mcgurgan with the use of vivid and vibrant colours. The eyes were the focal point of this look, with the perfect blend of different textures.

– “REIGNING QUEEN” again created by Paddy Mcgurgan, encapsulated every secret to the regal aura of a queen. The imaginative use of products and techniques brought the best out of this look.

–          “BRIDE OF INDIA” created by Avleen Bansal, was designed to make miracles out of the faces. Same was done on the Face of Indian Fashion Industry – Super Model Laxmi Rana

The highlight of the show was Grand Finale that showcased 18 unconventional looks on themes like Fantasy, Fashion and Bridal. A final ramp walk by 21 beautiful models along with 5 Acid Victims simply mesmerized the audience that applauded the efforts and expertise of trainers and students of MSTC. The vivid imaginations, brilliant artistry and unmatched techniques on display on stage in the show goes on to establish the credentials of MSTC as the best training school in the art of makeup in the country.

Essen/Germany, 9 October 2018

Out of a total of 8,610 entries, the year’s most creative and best-designed communication design projects emerged victorious. Their makers will be honoured at the award ceremony for the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2018 on 26 October in Berlin. From Australia to Iceland and from Taiwan to the USA and the United Arab Emirates – the award-winning designers and clients come to Berlin from all over the globe to celebrate their success at the Red Dot Gala and Designers’ Night. The winners of the top individual award, the “Red Dot: Grand Prix”, as well as of the newcomer’s award with prize money of 10,000 Euros is not announced to the international design scene until the evening itself. Other highlights on the evening include the awarding of the brand and the agency of the year.

Red Dot: Best of the Best for high design quality
In 2018, designers, agencies and companies from 45 countries submitted a total of 8,610 works to the Red Dot Award: Communication Design. But only well-designed and creative projects that won over the 24-member jury received one of the sought-after distinctions. As a result, after an adjudication process that lasted several days, the international panel of experts awarded the Red Dot: Best of the Best to just 0.7% of all entries. They thus recognised the very high design quality and creative achievement of 58 works. The creative heads behind the projects will receive their trophies on 26 October 2018 during the Red Dot Gala in the Konzerthaus Berlin.

Who will receive the Red Dot: Grand Prix?
During the award ceremony, seven of the projects that have won a Red Dot: Best of the Best will also be honoured as the best piece of work in their respective category. The jury can decide to award the Red Dot: Grand Prix, but this is not obligatory. As the top individual award in the competition, it recognises communication design featuring outstanding design quality and creativity. The recipients are not announced to the international audience until during the gala. Red Dot CEO Professor Dr. Peter Zec is the host for the evening. Together with jury members Jennifer Tsai from Taiwan, Damon Aval from Germany and Professor Dr. Seung Hun Yoo from South Korea, he hands over the trophies to the laureates.

Newcomer’s award with prize money of EUR 10,000
The air of excitement is guaranteed to the very last minute, not only for the established design professionals, but also for the up-and-coming new designers who subject their abilities to scrutiny in the Red Dot Award: Communication Design. They can hold out hope of winning the Red Dot: Junior Prize. This newcomer’s award recognises the best piece of work by an up-and-coming designer and comes with prize money of 10,000 Euros.

Brand and agency of the year
The Red Dot: Brand of the Year 2018 is also awarded in front of a full house during the award ceremony. This title recognises a brand that has won over the jury in the course of the competition with not one but several innovative pieces of work of above-average quality. The outstanding achievements of a highly successful creative innovator are also recognised each year. The designers at the Red Dot: Agency of the Year 2018 will not find out that they have won the sought-after title of honour until the Red Dot Gala, creating a moment of genuine surprise. As a symbol of their success, they will receive the “Stylus” trophy from thjnk, the agency of the year 2017, thus marking the absolute highlight of the Red Dot Gala.

Designers’ Night with winners exhibition
The evening culminates in the Designers’ Night in the ewerk Berlin, where the Red Dot laureates receive their certificates. This legendary party is where the international creative scene celebrates the competition year and their successes. These successes are showcased impressively in the winners exhibition “Design on Stage 2018”. The exhibition presents all of the works that have won a prize in the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2018. A selection of these works is on show in the Museum for Communication Berlin from 28 October 2018 to 13 January 2019 in the studio exhibition “Best Communication Design – Red Dot Winners Selection 2018”.

IRENA Assembly Set for Record Participation as 125 Ministers Gather to Accelerate Global Energy Transformation

Scaling-up renewable energy world-wide key priority as global leaders and representatives from 160 countries join more than 1,200 participants for Agency’s ninth Assembly which will elect a new Director-General

Abu Dhabi, UAE, 10 January 2019 – Heads of state and governments, more than 120 ministers and representatives from 160 countries will gather this week to engage in high-level discussions to accelerate renewable energy deployment in support of the sustainable development goals and global climate objectives. The officials will attend the ninth Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) – the world’s principal forum for international cooperation on renewable energy – taking place from 11-13 January 2019 in Abu Dhabi. This is the largest number of ministerial level participants to have registered for an IRENA Assembly ever. The policymakers will be joined by high-level representatives from international organisations, private sector, and civil society.

The Assembly is taking place against a backdrop of falling cost of renewable energy, a growing recognition of its socio-economic benefits and calls for greater action to avoid the worst effects of climate change. In October, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) report highlighted that the world has just 12 years left to take decisive action on climate mitigation and called for a rapid and far-reaching energy transformation based on renewables. According to IRENA analysis, renewable energy deployment must accelerate by a factor of six to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. This year, the Assembly will be presided over by H.E. Mr. Li Fanrong, Vice President of China’s National Energy Administration.

“Renewable energy presents a tremendous economic and social opportunity to industrialised and developing economies alike” said IRENA Director-General Mr Adnan Z. Amin. “IRENA’s almost-universal membership is an indication that renewable energy is truly a global undertaking and a key policy priority for countries all over the world. Their ability to navigate this transition is strengthened through engagement with the Agency.

“By bringing together policymakers from the whole world, the IRENA Assembly provides a truly unique platform for strengthening international cooperation on energy transformation,” concluded Mr. Amin.

“It is an honour to be President of IRENA’s ninth Assembly,” said Mr. Li Fanrong. “China has made renewable energy a clear strategic priority to serve both our economic and environmental goals but also to strengthen China’s contribution to key global objectives. This pursuit has been greatly supported by the international cooperation fostered by IRENA.

“The Assembly has come to represent an important opportunity to bring the global community together,” continued Mr. Li. “Our deliberations over the next few days will no doubt offer every country the insight and guidance necessary to stimulate further growth in the deployment of renewable energy as well all work to meet these pressing global objectives.”

The Assembly will feature several key discussions on critical issues related to the advancement of renewable energy, including:

  • Two ministerial roundtables will take place on catalysing off-grid renewable energy deployment towards universal electricity access and on the transformative impact of innovation in the renewable energy sector.
  • Three regional ministerial meetings will take place to share experiences in Africa, Small Island Developing States and Latin America.
  • The launch of a ground-breaking new IRENA study on ‘Gender in the Energy Transformation’ presenting findings on the role of women in renewable energy.
  • IRENA’s Legislators Forum brings together dozens of global parliamentarians to focus on the theme of parliamentary action to accelerate energy transformation to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all by 2030 (SDG 7).
  • The launch of a first of its kind report by the Global Commission on the Geopolitics of Energy Transformation on the geopolitical implications of energy transformation in the age of renewables.
  • The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and IRENA will announce the recipients of funding allocated through the 6th cycle of the IRENA/ADFD Project Facility.

The Assembly will also decide on the selection of a new Director-General.

A number of the Assembly’s Plenary discussions will provide opportunities for contributions from IRENA Member delegations, stakeholder groups and the private sector. Plenaries will focus on aspects of the Agency’s work and actions by countries in the development and deployment of renewables, including topics such as the socio-economic benefits of energy transition and the changing role of hydropower in the energy sector transformation. The Assembly will also consider the conclusions of the 16th IRENA Council and will provide guidance on specific administrative and institutional matters.

The full Assembly programme can be found here. Activities throughout the event can be followed on twitter using #IRENA9A.

About the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is the global intergovernmental organisation that supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future, and serves as the principal platform for international co-operation, a centre of excellence, and a repository of policy, technology, resource and financial knowledge on renewable energy. With 160 Members (159 States and the European Union) and 23 additional countries in the accession process and actively engaged, IRENA promotes the widespread adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy, including bioenergy, geothermal, hydropower, ocean, solar and wind energy, in the pursuit of sustainable development, energy access, energy security and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity.

BESC 12.01.2019. UMANG is Kolkata’s top draw in the college fests circuit. It is more than a mere inter-college event, it is an emotion, something that the college going fraternity looks forward to. It is also the most glamorous and the biggest of its kind in this part of the world, one that is exclusively organised and conducted by the students themselves.

besc umang

UMANG is also a platform that provides budding talents to showcase their skills straddling the entire spectrum from debates and writing skills to nail art. As a matter of fact, UMANG this time will feature a total of 72 events that will be spread over four days. As many as 1000+ participants from 56 colleges are expected to compete for the top slots.

UMANG will be organised within the confines of the BESC campus, which because of its enclosed nature provides captive audience for the sponsors and exhibitors. This year a total of approximately 15 thousands students are expected to be a part: all opinion makers, hardcore consumers with disposable incomes to spare.

Umang has always started with a bang. The UMANG being held in 2019  is actually the 2018 chapter of  the fest and this is for a reason. This year UMANG has as its theme ‘Nostalgia’, which promises to take everyone on a trip down memory lane. As is the norm in The Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC), even the minutest of details are paid heed to for here the search for excellence is not a means to an end but is an end in itself.

For the first time in the history of college fests a non-fiction book is being launched in UMANG – INDICTING GOLIATH by Lal Bhatia, our title sponsor. Other entities that have come on board to utilize this opportunity of establishing connect with the city’s youth include PAYTM, HAVELLS, TGIF, INOX and HHI .

One of the major attractions of UMANG is the celebrity performance that brings the curtain down. In the past we have had stars like Guru Randhawa, Sunidhi Chauhan, The Meet Brothers and the like have, set the stage on fire. This year no less is expected from the BE-ITES.

 About the BESC:

The Bhawanipur Education Society College is the most happening campus in the city where 10000+ students are enrolled in the pursuit of academic excellence. Sporting a completely wired campus with infrastructure that is as good as it can get, it also has state of the art facilities, like one of the most stocked libraries, a food court and variety of extra-curricular activities.

The BESC was established right after the nation had got independence with lofty ideals like providing quality education irrespective of constraints of caste, creed, colour or religion. It had started with an overwhelmingly commerce core as the need to provide college facilities to people who were otherwise gainfully employed was felt. BESC was also an institution that was aimed at providing equal opportunities to the girl child in those days of yore.

The more things change, the more they remain the same. Bhawanipur’s commerce core and the obsession to provide equal opportunities continue in the same vein. What has however evolved over time is the BESC  way of imparting education. Here the stress is on building better human beings as opposed to cramming them with mere academics. The main focus is on empowering the students and UMANG is one of the major exercises they participate in towards this end.

She was born and brought up in Dubai where she studied in the Indian High School. She has come to Kolkata to pursue higher studies and aims at achieving success in the field of Journalism. For her, the ambience in BESC is electrifying – “I couldn’t have imagined that a college fest can be such a scale had I not been a part of Umang” she says. “Being here in the BESC has been like a revelation for me and I will surely put in my everything to make the best of the opportunities that the college provides.”)

UN Women, the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women, and WaterAid India, an international not-for-profit determined to make clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene normal for everyone, everywhere within a generation, are supporting Run4Niine – the nationwide initiative to spread awareness on menstrual hygiene awareness this International Women’s Day.

Run4Niine, India’s largest nationwide run taking place in over 500 cities in over 20 states in India to end taboos around menstruation, will be flagged off from Lucknow, at 6:00am, Sahara Shaher on 8th March to mark International Women’s Day.

An initiative by Niine Sanitary Napkins, the made-in-India affordable yet premium sanitary napkins brand, Run4Niine is supported by the Niine Movement which launched thenationwide #18to82 campaign movement to bridge the gap between the 18% of menstruating females in India who use sanitary napkins, and the 82% predominantly engaging in unhygienic and unsafe alternatives such as old cloths, rags, hay and even ash.

Speaking about the importance of menstrual hygiene awareness, Farrukh Khan, Regional Manager (North), WaterAid India said, “Menstrual hygiene management is an important area of work for WaterAid. We use an approach that is comprehensive and focuses on addressing taboos while also creating an enabling environment to foster change. We believe that the issue needs a holistic approach that addresses all aspects, be it ensuring access to products, infrastructure or safe disposal of waste.”

Run4Niine is also supported by UN Women, the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide. Speaking about the Run4Niine, Nishtha Satyam, Deputy Representative, UN Women India MCO, said “Access to sexual and reproductive services and information is linked to all the aspects of women empowerment. The fact that only 18% of the women in India have access to sanitary napkins is a stark reminder of the efforts required to uproot misinformation at a grassroots level. Menstrual hygiene is also a sanitation matter. We need to provide more WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) facilities for women and girls, so that they can access all spaces in a safe and dignified manner. UN Women is pleased to support Niine Movement’s nationwide ‘Run4Niine’ event taking place this International Women’s Day.”

UOSSM Doctors Run Training Mission in Bangladesh To Prevent Diabetic Amputation

Geneva, Switzerland – Over 900,000 Rohingya refugees are living in unhealthy conditions in Cox’s Bazaar, Bangladesh. Due to a lack of available medical care, chronic diseases are ravaging the population. Among them, diabetes. This silent disease, whose severity is frequently underestimated, can cause multiple complications including the diabetic foot in 15% of cases. The onset of diabetic foot is the number one cause of amputation in the world according to a study conducted by the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot. From January 28th to February 2nd, UOSSM doctors went to Cox’s Bazar on a humanitarian mission to train doctors on diabetic foot management.

Every 30 seconds, somewhere in the world, a patient is amputated because of diabetes.

A diabetic foot (ulceration of the foot), left untreated will inevitably lead to amputation. To prevent needless amputations, UOSSM organized a theoretical and practical training about the diabetic foot for local doctors and medical staff. The courses were taught by Dr. Dured Dardari, associate professor at La Sorbonne and Head of the Diabetic Podiatry unit at the Sud-Francilien Hospital Center; Eric Deschamps, orthopedic technician and Marie Bouly, therapeutic education nurse.

On the first day of the training mission, our doctors made an alarming observation to the question: “Do you make an evaluation of the podological risks to your diabetic patients?” 100% of the participants answered “no”.

“The training that we are offering to the camp doctors is vital because for people suffering from diabetes, taking care of a foot injury can save their life. The doctors of Cox’s Bazaar, originally generalists, are forced to become cardiologists, rheumatologists, diabetologists and even surgeons because of the lack of trained staff. If they are not trained, the patients suffer. The primary health centers are overcrowded and become micro-hospitals. ” Explains Dr. Dured Dardari.

The 16 trainee doctors (men and women) benefited from training on the basic pathophysiology of the diabetic foot; discharge arrangements (a technique to promote healing), local care, and antibiotic therapy. Three sessions were organized with practical applications, explanatory videos and case reports during day visits to the medical centers in the camps.

During these medical visits and after having set up a consultation room and organized a health post, the French doctors and their colleagues were able to examine numerous patients (complete podological examinations, a detachment of hyperkeratosis with scalpel, care and debridement of surgical wounds). More than one hundred patients were treated in the various camps in the region (Balukhali camp, Moynerguna camp).

“I have seen a population of refugees who are completely lost. They have lost hope, they no longer have a taste for life, the children do not smile anymore. They have left their village, their home, to which they will surely never return. It is overwhelming. ” Said Dr. Dured Dardari.

This first training mission for the management of the diabetic foot was a real success! Participants are now familiar with podiatric assessment and risk ranking methods for their diabetic patients. Each one of them was able to receive a certificate of completion of training. To follow up on the training, a telemedicine program was set up between UOSSM French doctors and doctors from refugee camps; as well as the delivery of medical equipment and footwear.
